This in-person lecture and interactive workshop will show how to use freedom of information requests to uncover and mobilize state knowledge.
Information Mobilization and Public Accountability Collective of Toronto (IMPACT) is a grassroots collective that organically emerged to conduct Freedom of Information (FOI) research about homelessness and strategically make it public. IMPACT has gotten over 25 media pieces published, authored and published 4 journalistic pieces and released its own reports. This training will describe IMPACT’s model and philosophy. It will discuss how FOIs have been used in Toronto, providing insights about how the city government responds to organizing with the aim of understanding how we have won and lost and how to be more effective. Participants will then learn the basics of filing and navigating FOI requests and file an FOI request together.
Dr. AJ Withers is the Ruth Wynn Woodward Junior Chair in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University. As a leading antipoverty activist, critical researcher, and co-founder of the Information Mobilization and Public Accountability Collective of Toronto, AJ Withers has spent many years negotiating access to information regimes in social justice struggles. Much of their research is focused on homelessness and disability justice. Their books include Fight to Win: Inside Poor People’s Organizing (2021, Fernwood), A Violent History of Benevolence: Interlocking Oppression in the Moral Economies of Social Working (with Chris Chapman, 2019, University of Toronto Press), and Disability Politics and Theory (2012, Fernwood).
Information Mobilization and Public Accountability Collective of Toronto (IMPACT) est un collectif de base qui a émergé organiquement pour mener des recherches sur le sans-abrisme dans le cadre de la liberté d’information et les rendre publiques de manière stratégique. IMPACT a fait publier plus de 25 articles dans les médias, a écrit et publié 4 articles journalistiques et a publié ses propres rapports. Cette formation décrira le modèle et la philosophie d’IMPACT. Elle abordera la manière dont les lois sur l’accès à l’information ont été utilisées à Toronto, en donnant un aperçu de la manière dont le gouvernement de la ville réagit à l’organisation dans le but de comprendre comment nous avons gagné et perdu et comment être plus efficace. Les participants apprendront ensuite les bases du dépôt et de la navigation dans les demandes d’accès à l’information et déposeront ensemble une demande d’accès à l’information.
AJ Withers est titulaire de la Ruth Wynn Woodward Junior Chair in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies à l’université Simon Fraser. En tant qu’activiste anti-pauvreté, chercheur critique et co-fondateur de l’Information Mobilization and Public Accountability Collective de Toronto, AJ Withers a passé de nombreuses années à négocier des régimes d’accès à l’information dans le cadre de luttes pour la justice sociale. Une grande partie de leurs recherches porte sur le sans-abrisme et la justice pour les personnes handicapées.
