Host: Parc Ex Anti-Eviction Mapping

The Parc-Ex Anti-Eviction Mapping Project is a nonhierarchical and autonomous collective aiming to raise awareness about the effects of gentrification in Parc-Extension and other neighborhoods in Montreal. In this workshop, members of the collective will discuss how they document the local histories and neighbourhood changes and use research, writing and creative practices to hold politicians, institutions and businesses like the University of Montreal and the emerging tech industries accountable for their impact on gentrification. This will include a discussion of how they combine digital mapping tools and quantitative data with multimedia intervention and storytelling to highlight the effects of and resist gentrification in Montreal. Members of the collective will also discuss how they support and follow the leadership of community partners and residents, seeking to address their needs and work with them on an informed, consensual, and responsible basis.
Alessandra Renzi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University and a member of the Parc Ex Anti-Eviction Mapping Project Collective. Dr. Renzi’s interdisciplinary work explores the linkages and relays between media, art and civic engagement through community-led research, ethnographic studies and media projects. She has studied pirate television networks in Italy, the surveillance of social movements in Canada after 9-11 and housing and data justice in Indonesia. Her current research investigates how society’s increasing reliance on platforms, algorithms and AI is changing urban landscapes and community organizing alike. She is the PI of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grant titled “On the Margins of the Platform Economy: Community-led Responses to Technical Gentrification,” with focus on Montreal’s Parc Extension neighbourhood.
Emanuel Guay is a doctoral student in sociology at the Université du Québec à Montréal. His doctoral project focuses on access to housing for low-income households in Parc-Extension. He is a member of the Community-Based Action Research network of Parc-Extension (CBAR) and collaborated for three years (2017-2019) with the Social Equity and Diversity Education Office at McGill University (SEDE) as an associate researcher.
Sepideh Shahamati is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment at Concordia University. Her research focuses on humanistic approaches in urban planning theory and practice. She is interested in people’s interaction with the built environment and the tangible and intangible dimensions of cultural heritage. In her current research, she explores ways of integrating intangible assets of cities in planning and policy-making by investigating different mapping methods.
Yannick Baumann is a PhD student at Université de Montréal’s Geography Department in co-direction with the Geomedia Lab at Concordia University. Drawing on participative and activist methodologies, his PhD research focuses on the potential of (digital) data and (digital) tools to foster community relations and to support housing struggles. His primary interests are housing justice, financialization of housing, data activism, and alternative cartographies.

Le projet de cartographie anti-éviction de Parc-Ex est un collectif non hiérarchique et autonome qui vise à sensibiliser aux effets de la gentrification à Parc-Extension et dans d’autres quartiers de Montréal. Dans cet atelier, les membres du collectif discuteront de la façon dont ils documentent les histoires locales et les changements dans les quartiers et utilisent la recherche, l’écriture et les pratiques créatives pour tenir les politiciens, les institutions et les entreprises comme l’Université de Montréal et les industries technologiques émergentes responsables de leur impact sur l’embourgeoisement. Les membres du collectif discuteront de la façon dont ils combinent les outils de cartographie numérique et les données quantitatives avec l’intervention multimédia et la narration pour mettre en évidence les effets de l’embourgeoisement à Montréal et y résister. Les membres du collectif discuteront également de la façon dont ils soutiennent et suivent le leadership des partenaires communautaires et des résidents, en cherchant à répondre à leurs besoins et à travailler avec eux sur une base informée, consensuelle et responsable.

Ses recherches actuelles portent sur la manière dont la dépendance croissante de la société à l’égard des plateformes, des algorithmes et de l’IA modifie les paysages urbains et l’organisation des communautés. Elle est la chercheuse principale d’une subvention Insight du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines (CRSH) intitulée “On the Margins of the Platform Economy : Community-led Responses to Technical Gentrification “, avec un focus sur le quartier Parc Extension de Montréal.
